Aside from the new gadgets and new gifts you received from the last years Christmas party, you have something bigger and better stuff for this fresh and brand new year. I am not the best person to give a “wikihow” style tutorial but I am experienced enough to share some useful tips to be on top among the rest and have a blast this 2016. Here are the important stuff you might want to add to your bucket list: -meditate: I am not training you to become a monk. Scientifically speaking, meditating even a few minutes a day can drastically affect how you handle stress and tolerate both physical and mental pain. Clearing you head and focusing on the goal makes all the difference in starting a path towards a productive year. -Workout: No matter how old you are, working out is good for you. It’s an amazing way to stretch and stimulate those rarely used muscle groups. This means that to do more and be more, you have to diminish your time in the sofa. Be fit and response-able so you can do more chores, and fit enough to get your hands dirty on your chosen endeavor. -Be nice: Common knowledge says that we cant please everybody. Which is true. But never let that be your basis in perceiving other people. If you encounter rude people on the street, let it go and don’t spend too much energy on that because there are still countless people who wants to spend quality time with you. Ways to Make Your Home a Haven

Here are some of our best tips for making your home a cozy place that you’re always happy to come home to. 1. Diversify lighting. I’m a proponent of having three points of light in a room. Make your home work for you by being able to switch between brighter, more concentrated light when you need to focus and something softer when you want to relax. Build in that kind of flexibility by installing a dimmer switch for an overhead light or table lamp — both doable DIY projects. 2. Invest in comforting textures. What’s cozier than soft pillows, throws, and blankets? The bonus is they’re inexpensive and portable. I’m a fan of other small splurges too (for me, it’s good-smelling hand soap). 3. Don’t kill yourself getting clean; accept the never-ending cycle of household chores. I feel better in my home when it doesn’t look dirty or really disorganized, but I also don’t want to feel as if I’m constantly cleaning. While many people like keeping a cleaning schedule, I like incorporating chores into my daily routine. I’d also point you to The Lazy Person’s Guide to a Happy Home: Tips for People Who (Really) Hate Cleaning. 4. Carve out a space for what you care about. Even when you’re short on space, there’s always a way to prioritize what’s meaningful for you. Whether it’s turning a closet into a craft zone, designating a cozy reading nook or a place for your bike, or making your kitchen more functional with pegboard, follow your bliss. 5. Make space by paring down. Right now I feel like I have a... read more

for better health, get a pet

Dogs for the Aged “Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home,” says Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. “Their caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog,” says Hart. Walking a dog or just caring for a pet — for elderly people who are able — can provide exercise and companionship. One insurance company, Midland Life Insurance Company of Columbus, Ohio, asks clients over age 75 if they have a pet as part of their medical screening — which often helps tip the scales in their favor. Good for Mind and Soul Pet owners with AIDS are far less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. “The benefit is especially pronounced when people are strongly attached to their pets,” says researcher Judith Siegel, PhD. In one study, stockbrokers with high blood pressure who adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than did people without pets. People in stress mode get into a “state of dis-ease,” in which harmful chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine can negatively affect the immune system, says Blair Justice, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health and author of Who Gets Sick: How Beliefs, Moods, and Thoughts Affect Your Health. Studies show a link between these chemicals and plaque buildup in arteries, the red flag for heart disease, says Justice. Like any enjoyable activity, playing... read more

Save a few bucks

Don’t be tempted to skimp on carpet padding to save a few bucks. Just as a building needs a solid foundation, carpeting relies on a layer of padding for support, strength and a bit of extra cushioning. You can’t see the padding, but you’ll definitely spot the extra wear and tear on your new carpet if you pick an inadequate padding material. Made from rubber or foam materials, carpet padding conceals subfloor imperfections to improve the appearance of the finished floor. It also acts as insulation to help control the temperature of your home, and it even absorbs sound to protect your privacy and eliminate neighbor noise. Most importantly, padding supports your carpet through years of use, since it prevents carpet backing and fibers from coming apart over time. Consult your carpet manufacturer for padding recommendations and advice. Typically, high-traffic areas require firm, dense padding, while guest bedrooms and other light-traffic rooms may need less protection. It’s also important to match the padding to the type of carpet you plan to use. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a 7/16-inch (11-millimeter) padding with 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms) of density per cubic feet to support cut pile or cut loop carpeting. For Berber or thin loop rugs, look for a 3/8-inch (9.5-millimeter) pad or thinner, with 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) of density per cubic foot. Get a beautiful Rug Rugs are never out of fashion they bring out the life in room. But the proper placement of the rug is essential. Choosing the right colour and size plays an important role. If you have light coloured walls a dark coloured rug would be eye catching. It can also used as a divider by separating the dining room with the living room. Rugs adorned with floor cousions also give extra space for sitting when you have guests. Various types of rugs can be used according to the decoration like a wool rug, shag rug or vintage rug and many more.... read more

Have a Fab Living Room

Secret 1: Position Your Sofa Your couch is often the largest piece of furniture in the living room, so having it in the right spot can make all the difference. A good rule of thumb is to situate your couch so that it’s facing the door, whether it’s angled in a corner, floating or along a wall. If you’re forced to place it with its back to the entrance, add a console table behind the sofa with lamps or art books so it looks more inviting. Secret 2: Create a Focal Point Every living room needs an anchor or a place for your eye to rest, whether it’s a fireplace, beautiful artwork, a cool light fixture or a nice view. This will help ground the room and define its function. If you don’t already have a natural focal point, you can create one by showing off your favorite item in the room. Draw attention to the farthest wall with an oversize piece of art or a decorative mirror. If it’s your family room, a flat-screen TV might take center stage. Or play up a statement sofa with bright pillows. Secret 3: Get a Rockin’ Rug A great room starts off with an eye-catching rug. Before investing in a nice one, first determine how you plan on using the room. If you want a big, open area for gatherings and conversation, go with a large sisal that can handle foot traffic. If you want a separate space for dining, place a rug in just that spot to create a natural boundary. If you want people to feel comfy, choose a... read more
Cool Ways to Celebrate Christmas, California Style

Cool Ways to Celebrate Christmas, California Style

When you live in a place with more palms than snow, stereotypical images of Christmas just don’t work. It’s awfully hard to go on a sleigh ride at the beach, after all. But Californians, being an imaginative lot, have come up with a whole batch of variations on Christmas traditions and some new ones of their own, too. Harbor Christmas Parades: Take an old-fashioned Christmas parade down to the nearest marina or harbor, substitute decorated and lighted boats for floats, and you’ve got a California-style Christmas parade. Locations featuring these festive delights include San Diego Harbor’s Parade of Lights, and the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade andOakland/Alameda Estuary Lighted Yacht Parade of more than 100 lighted pleasure craft. If you’d rather be in a boat than watching one pass by, the Huntington Harbor Cruise of Lights is a charming trip through the harbor’s waterways past houses decorated with enough lights to make Las Vegas jealous. Christmas “Training”: Near Santa Cruz, Roaring Camp Railroad runs a special Holiday Lights Train, leaving from the boardwalk, an especially festive, old-fashioned affair with live music and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus. You can take a special Polar Express trip in Sacramento, but plan ahead – this event sells out in early October. Santa also takes a ride with his friends at Railtown 1897 State Park, November through December. Christmas Concerts: The a capella group Chanticleer is a San Francisco area favorite, performing Gregorian chants and popular tunes in some of the area’s prettiest venues, including historic Spanish missions. They also perform once every holiday season in at the Disney Concert Hall in... read more

preparations for December 25 take up almost a fortnight

Christmas Day comes but once a year – but preparations for December 25 take up almost a fortnight, new research has found. The typical family Christmas takes 12 days, 14 hours and 13 minutes to organise, according to a new study. Between shopping for presents, hanging decorations, and preparing and cooking a festive feast, the hours mums and dads devote to making Christmas Day as special as possible add up to almost two weeks. But not everybody is quite so well-prepared, a third of families leave all the work to the four weeks leading up to December 25. The survey of 2,000 UK parents, commissioned by Wilkinsons, found that nine days, 15 hours and 48 minutes is spent researching and shopping for presents. A further three hours and 26 minutes is spent wrapping the gifts, while writing Christmas cards takes up two hours and 31 minutes. A total of three hours and six minutes is spent retrieving decorations from the loft and hanging them up around the house, while two days, 10 hours and 48 minutes is taken up thinking, planning and shopping for food for Christmas dinner. A further two hours and 34 minutes is spent cooking the festive feast and laying the table.   Steph Chambers, Christmas buyer for the company, said: ‘A lot of time and effort goes into making Christmas Day the most special of the year, and thanks to our research we are able to pinpoint exactly how much time and effort it takes. ‘So from now on, we won’t talk about the 12 days of Christmas but the 12 days, 14 hours and... read more

Christmas in Southern California

Christmas in Southern California

While California doesn’t have the snow and cold that ushers in the Christmas spirit for most of the United States, there are still a ton of great events that allow you to get into the holiday spirit. While I cannot speak for the epic celebrations in Northern California, here are my favorite ways to enjoy the holiday season in Southern California. The Mission Inn is one of the premier holiday light events in Southern California. Every year this famous hotel gets completely decked out in Christmas lights and it creates a unique and free night for the whole family to enjoy called The Festival of Lights. You can walk through the hotel and see their inside decorations or simply walk around the outside and up the street to enjoy pictures with Santa, a small ice skating rink and all of the festive food treats you can possibly eat. This is a great holiday tradition to create with your family as it is a free event that you can make as long or as short as you would like. Chill is a winter wonderland located right in the dome next to the Queen Mary. This ice kingdom features dozens of different ice sculptures complete with a 24 foot ice replica of the Queen Mary. It has ice slides, animals and a walk through ice castle, and around the outside there is ice skating and tubing. Make sure to dress warmly though as even with the provided parka it is a cool 7 degrees in the ice kingdom. Usually open from mid-November to mid-January this large ice rink right in the center of LA is in its 15th... read more

Giving Experiences Rather Than Stuff

The cost of Christmas U.S. parents spend an average of $271 per child on Christmas, according to a 2011 survey by TODAY Moms and Parenting.com. But even as we spend more, its not clear whether the outcomes we get are any more meaningful. Trading pricey gifts for quality time might just improve your family’s health and well-being, according to FamilyFacts.org, a project of the Heritage Foundation, which says spending time together enjoying fun activities is associated with kids and parents having a stronger emotional bond. Moreover, studies have shown that kids who communicate with their parents tend to do better at school, and teenagers who actively spend time with their parents tend to have fewer behavioral problems. Experience togetherness Though some experience-based gifts can be more expensive than the Nintendo 3DS your 8-year-old might want, you don’t necessarily need to spend more to make these gifts meaningful. You can’t place a dollar value on spending time together as a family or on the memories that will come from shared experiences. Here are just a few ways to replace “stuff” with experiences: Instead of spending about $400 on an Xbox One, you could give your family a hot air balloon ride. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, you can take off at sunset for the ride of a lifetime over scenic Southwestern landscapes. Top the experience off with a special meal. Maybe this year you can pass on the iPad, which can cost $450 to $850 and instead take your family on a train ride, such as a scenic ride up the California coast. Traveling daily between Los Angeles and Seattle, the... read more

Remebering The Meaning of Christmas

As a culture we place a lot of expectations on the holidays. As kids we always looked forward to the joy of the season: all the cool stuff we would get, all the great food and treats, and lots of time to just enjoy life and have fun since school was out for a few weeks. These memories are imprinted into our mind and are revived every year with the sounds and sights of the holidays. To most it’s a special time of year, one in which we celebrate and connect with those closest to us. Or so we hope. But every year many people are lonely. For some it’s another year without that special someone to share the season with. Surely not all single adults are miserable, yet an enormous amount are. For these folks, they can’t wait for January 2nd. All the laughter, gaiety, and partying around them makes them even more sad. They remember when it was fun for them, maybe last year (or ten years ago) when they were in love. For others, maybe they have moved away from their family and don’t know many people in their new city. Or possibly they will spend this year away from their children, deceased partner, or ex-lover for the first time. Most of us will not have this experience this holiday season, but for those that do, remember to invite them into your homes and lives, and to share with them the closeness of friendship. This could be a co-worker, neighbor, relative, or friend. Regardless, this is the most significant gesture of the holiday spirit you can... read more

Family Reunion

Since time immemorial, Christmas has been the season of spreading good cheer, of spending time with your family and of sharing, caring and giving. Of love and compassion and of family bonding. However, it is not a surprise that a large number of people nowadays do not spend Christmas with their families. While some of them are too busy with other pursuits, the vast majority of these people do not spend Christmas with their family because they do not like doing it. Instead of spending Christmas with their family, they prefer spending it alone or with friends and colleagues. This is indeed a sad reflection of our times. But more than this, it is a wake up call for all of us who have been blessed with a good family and great kids, but are too busy with our professional lives to spend time with them. It is therefore imperative that we take every opportunity to bond with our family and make the most of our relations, and Christmas, no doubt, provides us with the best opportunity for bonding with our family. So this time around, make sure that you take time out from your busy work schedules in order to have a long Christmas at home. Trust me, your old parents and your young children will really appreciate it. Stop treating Christmas as a time for socializing and designate it as official family bonding time. Invite family like parents, children and their spouses and your brothers and sisters with their families for Christmas. Spend quality time with your kids before your extended family arrives. Christmas is a good... read more

Pulling Together Your Living Room Before the Holidays

1. Imagine it empty. Imagine your room without any furniture in it — the walls and floors completely blank. This may be easier said than done, but it’s worth a try. Pay close attention to which areas seem improved without your stuff in them — this is a good clue that something in that area needs to go. Since we’re not discussing how to do a complete room makeover here (an ideabook for another day), try to stay focused on what you can realistically accomplish before the holidays. Removing items is always easier (on the budget, at least) than buying something new, so see what you can do to refresh your room simply by taking away what’s bothering you. Even moving a piece to another room could work — if you don’t miss it, sell it or give it away. How to Get Rid of Your Extra Stuff 2. Find your focal point. In a living room with a mantel, that is often the natural focal point. But you might have something else you want to draw attention to, like a gorgeous painting, a statement-making sofa or a beautiful view. Once you have determined your room’s focal point, remove anything on or around it that detracts from it: Is the mantel cluttered with decor? Are there so many throw pillows on your sofa that you can’t see the beautiful nailhead trim? 7 Tips to Get With a New Minimalist Mentality 3. Consider the flow. Some rooms are simply easier to arrange furniture in than others. If you’ve been having trouble getting the furniture in the right spot, try stepping... read more

Arranging Your Living Room for the Holidays

1. Follow the furniture rules of thumb Have you ever been in someone’s living room and felt like everyone had room to walk around without bumping into things, and that everything was within easy reach? They were probably adhering the the basic rules of thumb for furniture placement. Living room furniture is usually oriented towards the fireplace – this doesn’t mean everything has to face the fireplace. It simply means that the fireplace usually serves as the focal point of the room and is generally placed in the central part of the room. You’ll want to leave about 36″ of space for walkways; this will give two people enough room to pass each other. Coffee tables should be no higher than the seat of the sofa and should be about 18″ from the the surrounding objects. End tables can sit right next to your seating. The right height of these tables is whatever height is comfortable for the person sitting down: too high or too low and it will be awkward to reach for things. 2. Invest in the right pieces If throwing a holiday party has made you want to throw out your furniture and start a new, you’re not alone. A party is a good excuse to finally get that piece you’ve always wanted and to possibly upgrade your furnishings. But choose wisely. If you regularly host parties and are looking for ways to quickly add surfaces, think about investing in nesting tables. If you never have enough seating, consider purchasing ottomans or stools that can be used for multiple purposes. If you need more options for lighting,... read more

Last week my dog had surgery and had a few accidents on the carpet. I called up Hen’s Dry Carpet cleaning scheduled an appointment, they were very professional. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Juan was specialist that came and assisted. He was kind enough to suggest Scotchgard to help with future stains. Sadly my pup is still dealing with the effects of the surgery so I called today and scheduled another appointment. I couldn’t be happier with the price i am paying for the spot clean and the Scotchgard. Thank you Hen’s Dry Carpet Cleaning, you have earned my business for life !

I highly recommend this company if you are looking for the best carpet cleaning

Alan Penney

Customer

I called on Monday and was told they could come out Tues morning or Wens. morning (which is fast service!).  Juan just left and he did an AMAZING job.  He was even able to remove a black grease stain from my cream carpet (it’s been there for over a year because I couldn’t get it out!).  He was polite, professional and really clean!  He wiped up my hard wood floors as he walked back and forth from the rainy day outside.  He was extra careful to explain how long I should leave the foil on the legs of the couch, and he moved the heavier pieces of furniture I couldn’t handle.

I would’ve given Juan and Hen’s Dry 5 stars, except that my phone experience wasn’t very “professional”. Not that it was “bad”, just not “good”.  As someone who works in business, I KNOW that a professional phone demeanor can make or break a job… so I would suggest Hen’s Dry hire someone who knows how to take care of the phone business and can do scheduling, etc.  Then I think they’ll have a solid 5 star business!

Been using Hens carpet cleaning for 4 years at the apartments I manage. They do an exceptional job. They are fast and the price is reasonable. I had a couple of stains on the carpet and asked them to remove pet hair in carpet, they did just that. The carpet was like new and the pet odor and hair was all gone. I will always use hens dry carpet cleaners.
